I’m a huge music lover. Also, I hate the radio.
Local radio has been a bust here in Milwaukee for years. The problem stems from the idea that a good song must be played every 15 minutes for 2 years around here, and that all commercial breaks must be taken at the exact same time. If I’m driving (when I listen to the most music), nothing kills me more than having to flip through stations, only to find that 3 of them are on commercials and the other 1 is playing a song I hate. Add to that the fact that most mainstream music is lousy, and you’ve got a losing combination.
My first foray into internet radio, where commercials are minimal and all tastes are represented, was Shoutcast. There I found all the fantastic music I could want. In addition, Yahoo! had a music service where you create your own station and they would suggest music for you. This really hit home for me, as it allowed me to regularly listen to my favorite groups and singers (Jason Mraz, Nickel Creek, etc.) and finding even more music that would fit me.
To ditch local radio and enjoy some of the great selection out there, you usually have to drop a bunch of money on equipment for satellite radio (XM). But if you’re just sitting at your desk, a laptop is all you need. My Two Dollars has a great post on where to find free radio all over the internet. For any music lover out there, this is an absolute gold mine. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to my Pandora radio station.
Where do you get your favorite tunes?
