The Simple Dollar Posts Ten Important Life Omissions
Apr 29th, 2009 by The Practical Nerd

Well, The Simple Dollar has done it again. Today, Trent posted Ten Things I Wish I Had Done When I Was Twenty. It’s crazy to think about how irresponsible we all have been in our twenties so far, when we should be using this time to start building the foundation for our adult lives. My favorite:

I wish I had saved just a bit. If I had just put away $5 every time I spent money on something frivolous, I would have barely missed it at all. I could have just stuck it into a savings account if nothing else and just let it ride until I needed it for something big like the down payment on our house. Even a few dollars saved here and there over my younger years would have made a big difference when we went to buy.

A great, rather heartfelt read. Check it out. Do you have any regrets? Things you wish you would have done years ago? Let us know in the comments!

Lifehacker Links to an Article on Supermarket Marketing and How to Control Yourself
Apr 29th, 2009 by The Practical Nerd

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Lifehacker. It’s got a perfect blend of really nerdy computer advice along with incredibly practical tips as well. This time they bring an article with Tod Marks of Consumer Reports on subtle supermarket marketing and how they get you to buy into things you don’t need:

"Prime selling space is right in the center, eye-level if you will," Marks says. In fact, companies sometimes pay thousands of dollars to have their products placed on the center shelf. And, Koeppen continues, those items tend to be more expensive than the ones found high or low. "The lower level and the high-on-top level, they’re kind of the low-rent districts," Marks notes. "You put commodities there — things that don’t bring in a lot of profits that people are going to buy, no matter what."

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Head on over to Lifehacker for their full write-up and a link to the original article. Do you have any special tricks you use to save money in the supermarket? Share them in the comments!

Simple. Organized. Life. Shows Another Great Reason To Use Google Docs!
Apr 29th, 2009 by The Practical Nerd

google docs - Google Image Search - Mozilla Firefox

Google Documents is a free collection of office tools that you can use online, right now. I’m a big fan of Google Docs, as it is compatible with all Microsoft Office software (in other words, you can exchange documents with pretty much anyone and nobody notices), it is nicely intertwined with Gmail, and it doesn’t cost a DIME.

Great blog Simple. Organized. Life. has a great look at some FREE tools that you can use to automatically set yourself up with Google Docs, including budgets, calendars, to-do lists, and much more! And if you need to see/edit/print a document and you are away from your computer, all you need to do is log into Google Docs on any computer and have full access to your documents! Pretty cool, hey?

Do any of you currently use Google Docs? Let us know in the comments!

What’s YOUR “$500 La-Z-Boy”?
Apr 29th, 2009 by The Practical Nerd

recliner

A couple years ago, I was living in my brother’s basement. It wasn’t exactly roomy, but it had everything I needed and the rent was cheap. Originally, I had a futon as my "living room furniture". But when I came home from a long night of work, I wanted to be able to put my feet up. Sure, I could lay down, but then to see the TV, I’d have to lay sideways all the time, and I didn’t want to do that. The way I saw it, there were three options:

  1. Get a small ottoman to put my feet up.
  2. Spend maybe $50 on a small, cheap chair from Goodwill or something, so that I could sit comfortably.
  3. Drop $500 on a brown leather La-Z-Boy recliner.

Guess which one I picked?

Did I have $500? Not a chance. I was waiting tables and barely making bills. But I did have a credit card with plenty of room. Is that a purchase that I regret? Nope. I’ve always enjoyed this chair, and I have taken plenty of naps in it. In fact, I use it as my "office chair" now. How many people can say they get up in the morning to sit in a big leather chair all day at work?

But, if given the chance, I would have gone back in time and not bought it. I didn’t have the money. I still don’t. It was a ridiculous purchase. At the time, I kept saying things like, "Laying on the futon all the time was killing my back," and "I figured if I’m going to invest in a chair, it might as well be a good one!" Those were all stupid rationalizations. That purchase sits on one of my credit cards to this day, still earning way too much in interest.

It’s easy to look back on a rash decision and make a rationalization for yourself. It helps you ignore the fact that you made a lousy choice. But let’s get real: look back on your history, whether financial or personal, or whatever. Do you see any decisions that, while you don’t necessarily regret, you would have probably done different if given the chance?

I’m happy where I am in life, and if getting this La-Z-Boy leather chair has gotten me to this point, then I owe it a debt of gratitude, at least in the grand scheme of things. But if I had to go back, knowing what I know now, I would have done differently. Take a few minutes before making a rash decision or an impulse purchase. Make sure that you aren’t purchasing emotionally. If you buy things with just emotional impulses, you are never going to be able to handle your money.

Simply put: use your brain. Don’t spend it unless you actually have it. Credit card balances are not free money. They are loans. Start looking at it as something you owe, not something you have.

Do you have a purchase that makes you smack yourself in the forehead when you think about it now? Share in the comments!

Five Ways the Swine Flu Story is Dumb!
Apr 29th, 2009 by The Practical Nerd

929117_22204583 I couldn’t agree more with this article from Smak News. The world is flipping out about a handful of people getting sick, and people forget that the media blows these types of stories out of proportion to get the all-important ratings and attention from the Cooler People. Read it, have a laugh, and throw out your paper mask.
