Education is one of the pillars of life. I don’t mean sitting in a classroom and reading overpriced textbooks. I mean getting out there and experiencing it, and part of experience is sharing it with others. The internet is starting to show its potential for collective thought and gives people all over the world the chance to share their stories and let others learn from them.
And you know what? It’s a wonderful thing. I know people resist the internet for a variety of reasons, but it allows you to get your own forms of education: quick, easy, and directly in line with your interests. How many curriculums can say that?
Um, but I don’t have all day to sit around and follow websites!
Right. And you don’t need to.
The days of clicking around to 87 different websites are in the past. RSS feeds make it easy to subscribe to blogs and follow them whenever you want. There is a variety of them out there, from offline ones that download content to your computer, and online ones that allow you to access the content from anywhere. I happen to use Google Reader, and I love it dearly. Here are a few pro’s to the Google Reader experience:
- Real-time updates: Content shows up the second it hits the Web.
- Simple and quick: You can read the post and move on with your life, if you need to. The article is marked as “read” and you won’t see it anymore, unless you save it.
- Find new stuff: Push your education further – Google Reader gives you suggestions based on your browsing history and your blog subscriptions, allowing you to discover new content. I’ve found some of my favorite blogs this way.
- Read on-the-go: Got an internet-enabled phone and you’re in the waiting room at the doctor? Browse to your Google Reader and kill a few minutes. You can read from any computer, anywhere, at anytime.
Okay, I’m sold. So where do I get started?
Well, here are a few of my favorite blogs to get you started on some sound advice and some great stories:
-
The Practical Nerd. Come on! Great advice from around the Web without all the nerdiness? You can’t blame a guy for trying, right?
-
Rock Your Day. Dave Navarro provides great, inspirational reading to get you to improve your life habits. It’s extensive, and it is known everywhere for being one of the smartest blogs today.
-
Budgets Are $exy. Giveaways, sound financial advice, and real-world experience. J. Money’s blog has it all, and he does it with an open attitude towards relatable personal finance and a touch of humor that makes it really easy to read.
-
Christian Personal Finance. Even if you’re not a person of faith, Bob brings you great resources for helping you get your finances on track.
-
Get Rich Slowly. Yeah, I know – another personal finance blog. But you know, this country’s biggest problem is a bunch of people that have no clue how to manage their money. Get a handle on your debt and devote yourself to sensible personal finance with the blog that
Money magazine called “the most inspiring money blog” on the Web.
-
Lifehacker. Yeah, it can get a little nerdy at times, but there’s no blog I read more than Lifehacker. This site offers multiple articles
per day, and you’ll see a lot of links for them here – things like saving money, boosting your productivity, and great new tools and programs from all over the place.
-
The Art of Nonconformity. Chris is the inspiration for this blog. It needs to be said. The guy knows how to make practical advice for everyone and gives away a lot of free information that would be worth thousands elsewhere.
-
The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss. Few people are as polarizing as Tim Ferriss, and his book,
The Four-Hour Workweek. I’d have to say that most criticisms are from people who are oversimplifying the ideas in the book, but that’s for another article. Instead, enjoy and be inspired by a guy who certainly has built himself a one-of-a-kind life.
-
The Fluent Self. Havi Brooks wants to break your bad habits. She calls it “destuckification”. I call it “wonderful”.
-
Zen Habits. I’ve followed this one for a long time. Leo Babauta helps you do just about anything by creating good habits for your life.
This is an opinionated list. Everybody has their own interests, but I wanted to give you a launching pad for blogs that you might want to follow. But #1 is fantastic. Everybody should subscribe to that one!
